From Idea to First Chapter in 10 Minutes: A Beginner's Guide
You don't need an outline, a character bible, or writing experience. Just one idea. Here's how to turn it into a real chapter in under 10 minutes using AI.
You don't need an outline, a character bible, or writing experience. Just one idea. Here's how to turn it into a real chapter in under 10 minutes using AI.
You have a story idea. Maybe it's been rattling around in your head for weeks β a character, a scene, a "what if" that won't leave you alone.
But you haven't started writing. Because starting feels like a massive commitment: you need to outline the plot, define every character, figure out the world, plan the structureβ¦
What if you didn't need to do any of that?
What if you could go from a single idea to a complete first chapter in 10 minutes?
That's exactly what we're going to do. No preparation. No writing experience required. Just your idea and 10 minutes.
That's it. Let's go.
Sign up and click Create Novel. You'll see a form asking for basic information:
That's the minimum. Hit create.
You can also add background details, writing style preferences, and worldbuilding notes β but you don't have to. The AI works with whatever you give it, and you can always add more later.
Time elapsed: 2 minutes.
Every story needs at least one character. Go to the Characters tab and create one:
This takes about two minutes if you type fast, one minute if your character has been living in your head already.
The key insight: this character profile isn't just notes for you. It gets automatically injected into every chapter the AI generates. The AI will know Mara is skeptical and guarded β it won't write her as bubbly and open, even 20 chapters later.
Time elapsed: 4 minutes.
Go to your novel's draft page. You'll see an empty chapter list. Click to add a new chapter.
Now you have three options for creating a chapter plan:
Option A: Write it yourself. Type a brief outline of what happens in chapter 1.
Option B: Give the AI a spark. Type one sentence β "Mara arrives at a cold case crime scene and hears the victim for the first time" β and the AI expands it into a detailed plan with key events.
Option C: Let the AI decide. Click "AI Continue" and the AI will generate a logical first chapter based on your novel's premise and characters.
Let's go with Option B. Type your spark idea and hit generate.
In about 15 seconds, you'll get:
Read through it. Does it match your vision? Edit anything that doesn't feel right. Add a key event, remove one, change the direction. This is your story β the AI suggests, you decide.
Time elapsed: 6 minutes.
Happy with the plan? Hit Generate Content.
The AI now writes your complete first chapter. It uses everything you've set up:
In about 30 seconds, you'll have a complete chapter β typically 2,000-4,000 words of narrative prose.
Read it. You'll notice:
Don't like it? Generate another version. Noveble keeps all versions so you can compare. Try different approaches to the same chapter β one more atmospheric, one more action-driven β and pick your favorite.
Time elapsed: 9 minutes.
Your first chapter is done. Before you move on, take 60 seconds to notice what just happened behind the scenes:
The system automatically extracted:
When you generate chapter 2, the AI will receive this information automatically. It will know that Mara heard the victim's voice, that she's keeping it secret, that there's an unsolved case from 15 years ago. You won't need to remind it.
This is the foundation of continuity. Every chapter you write adds to the AI's understanding of your story. By chapter 10, the system has a comprehensive map of your plot, your characters' development, and every unresolved thread.
Time elapsed: 10 minutes. You have a first chapter.
You now have a choice:
Keep going. Click "AI Continue" for chapter 2. The AI will pick up exactly where chapter 1 left off, suggesting a natural next beat in the story. You can write 5 chapters in an hour this way.
Flesh out your world. Go back and add more characters, fill in worldbuilding details, define your writing style. Every detail you add makes future chapters richer and more consistent.
Edit and refine. Read through chapter 1 carefully. Adjust the parts that don't feel like "your" story. The AI gives you a draft β you make it yours.
Take a break. Everything is saved. Come back tomorrow, next week, next month. Your characters, your plans, your chapters β all waiting exactly where you left them.
Good. Vague ideas are perfect starting points.
"A magic school, but dark" β Create the novel, add one student character, generate chapter 1. The AI will flesh out the details and you can steer from there.
"Two strangers meet on a train" β That's your chapter 1 spark. Let the AI figure out why they're on the train and what happens next.
"I just have a character, no plot" β Create the character in detail. Use "AI Continue" for chapter 1. The AI will build a scenario around who they are.
The point isn't to have everything figured out before you start. The point is to start, and let the story reveal itself as you go. Many published novels began exactly this way.
Let's be honest: an AI-generated first draft is not a finished novel. It's a starting point β a detailed, structured, consistent starting point that you can edit, rewrite, and make your own.
What the AI gives you:
What you bring:
Think of it as collaboration. The AI handles the heavy lifting of drafting and continuity. You handle the art.
You've read this far, which means your idea is real enough to deserve a chance.
Here's what to do:
Ten minutes from now, you'll have a first chapter. Not a plan to write someday. Not notes in a document you'll never open again. An actual chapter, with actual characters, in an actual story.
Your idea has waited long enough. Give it 10 minutes.
